Description CodeCell Description Section

Meet ProtoBot! Your pocket-sized robot that’s as fun to build as it is to control. Powered by four torquey motor-wheels and our CodeCell module, this mini robot is fast, smart, and built for hands-on learning. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced maker, ProtoBot gives you the full experience of building, coding, and experimenting with your own robot. ProtoBot is available in two build levels:

  • Pro – Build it completely from scratch by soldering and screwing every part together. You’ll assemble all the electronics yourself (basic soldering skills required) and watch your robot come alive step by step.
  • Beginner – The electronics come pre-soldered, so no soldering is required — just screw everything together and enjoy watching the parts come to life.

Both versions include easy-to-follow instructions, giving you a rewarding, hands-on experience that makes you proud of the robot you built.

ProtoBot’s shell is 3D printed in dual-color PLA and is fully open source. You can reprint it in your favorite colors or modify the design to your liking. It's accessories can also be 3D printed. An included breadboard lets you expand ProtoBot’s capabilities by connecting external I²C sensors such as temperature or humidity sensors, or by building your own circuits - from LED add-ons to solar charging. It’s truly a tiny playground for experimentation and creativity.

Once built, connect ProtoBot to our free MicroLink App (Android & iOS) to drive it, interact with its sensors, and explore automation. You can control it with a joystick, create simple sequences using block-based automation, and also replay movements. This makes it an engaging introduction to robotics and coding, especially for young makers.

The app unlocks features such as:

  • Drive – Control ProtoBot with a joystick and move it freely
  • Automate – Program actions with block-based coding
  • Shape – Drive in squares, circles, or infinity loops
  • Rewind – Drive back the same path you just took
  • Avoid – Detect and stop before front obstacles
  • Balance – Try to balance itself upright for a few seconds
  • Dodge – Detect overhead obstacles and duck to avoid them
  • Record – Log data from externally connected I²C sensors (like temperature, humidity, etc)

ProtoBot’s software is completely open source. Its optional-to-use Arduino library can be downloaded directly through the Arduino IDE and includes multiple ready-to-run examples, so you can dive deeper into custom coding, integrate sensors, log data, or control extra hardware through the expansion header.

ProtoBot is designed as an educational robotic platform that helps you climb the learning ladder - from building your first robot to customizing and coding it for your own missions!

Frequently Asked Questions CodeCell FAQs
How we ship your ProtoBot?

ProtoBot has a little 170mAh LiPo battery, so it can only ship via FedEx or DHL due to regulations. This may increase your cart total, but it’s express and reliable. You can also add other items to the same shipment to make the most of it. We appreciate your understanding 😊

What ages is it suitable for?

ProtoBot comes as a fun maker kit that you can transform into a cool robot, designed for curious minds of all ages. Younger kids can join in too with a little help from an adult, especially when using the app. The robot comes with an easy-to-use educational App and for those interested, clear Arduino examples that make coding simple for beginners.

Assembly does involve some soldering, so children under 12 should only build it with adult supervision. Please note that the kit contains small parts, such a LiPo battery and screws, which may pose a choking hazard and must be kept out of reach of young children.

How to update the Software?

ProtoBot works seamlessly with our MicroLink App, letting you drive it and update the firmware whenever new software is released. For those who want to dive deeper and customize its behavior, you can install the ProtoBot Arduino library - just follow the installation steps in our User Guide.

We are continuously updating and adding new features to this library, so make sure you're using the latest version.

Is it Maker-Friendly?

ProtoBot is designed with makers in mind! Its shell and accessories can be 3D printed at your home, and you can expand its capabilities by adding more I2C sensors, displays, or other electronics using the breadboard attachment. This lets you customize your robot, make it smarter, and adapt it to your own projects. It also comes with an open-source Arduino library built around our tiny CodeCell module (available separately in our store), making upgrades and part replacements easy.

Inside the box, you’ll find all the robot parts along with step-by-step instructions to guide you through the fun build.
