FlatFlap is the thinnest flapping actuator we've seen ~ just 0.3mm thin! This compact module can be used both as a flap or to add eye-catching motion to your projects, transforming them into unique pieces of art. Its easy to attach and comes with a color-changing sticker, to make your creations stand out! This FlatFlap actuator is intended for low- force applications, only managing to lift weights under 2 grams, using a simple on-off approach. But by increasing the operating frequency to resonate with the mass (between 3–25 Hz), you can amplify its lifting force and vibration speed. For smooth, organic motions, check out the examples provided in the DriveCell library.

The FlatFlap can integrate seamlessly into any flat surface. It's easy to connect with a peelable adhesive back and optional screws, ensuring secure adhesion and flawless installation. The adhesive on its back-side, is made of 3M467. Its cover can be peeled off with tweezers, just ensure the mounting surface is clean before attaching the actuator. Similarly, if you're mounting the Blue/Pink Color-Changing Sticker, use tweezers to peel its backing and confirm the flap’s surface is clean before connecting it.

The box will include the FlatFlap, Blue/Pink Color-Changing Sticker, a set of two M1.2 screws and the optional soldered DriveCell. Please not that the aluminum reflecting flap is not polished and may include some scratches. This PCB is ROHS Compliant & follows IPC-A-600 II standard. Also, please note that the FlatFlap is intended to be used as a DIY maker kit. For commercial purposes, please get in touch.

Does FlatFlap need magnets?

The FlatFlap comes pre-assembled with the magnet so no additional magnets are required. Just power the coil for it to be repelled or attracted to the magnet. Add an h-bridge like our tiny DriveCell, to control the current through the coil, and produce smooth flappy motion.

What ages is FlatFlap suitable for?

FlatFlap is perfect for anyone curious about electronics! It comes with well-explained Arduino examples, making it easier to get started. Since FlatFlap requires soldering, we recommend ensuring that soldering is done under proper adult supervision and guidance for children under 12. Otherwise one can also purchase it pre-soldered with a DriveCell. Please also note that the package includes small parts, like screws, so care should be taken when handling them.
