FlatFlap is the thinnest flapping actuator we've seen ~ just 0.3mm thin! This compact module can be used both as a flap or to add eye-catching motion to your projects, transforming them into unique pieces of art. Its easy to attach and comes with a color-changing sticker, to make your creations stand out! This FlatFlap actuator is intended for low- force applications, only managing to lift weights under 2 grams, using a simple on-off approach. But by increasing the operating frequency to resonate with the mass (between 3–25 Hz), you can amplify its lifting force and vibration speed. For smooth, organic motions, check out the examples provided in the DriveCell library.

The FlatFlap can integrate seamlessly into any flat surface. It's easy to connect with a peelable adhesive back and optional screws, ensuring secure adhesion and flawless installation. The adhesive on its back-side, is made of 3M467. Its cover can be peeled off with tweezers, just ensure the mounting surface is clean before attaching the actuator. Similarly, if you're mounting the Blue/Pink Color-Changing Sticker, use tweezers to peel its backing and confirm the flap’s surface is clean before connecting it.

The pack will include the FlatFlap module, a Blue-Pink Color-Changing Sticker, and a bag of M1.2 screws. Please not that the aluminum reflecting flap is not polished and may include some scratches.

Safety & Use FlatFlap Safety and Use

FlatFlap is a low-voltage electronic development module intended for motion-based DIY projects, prototypes and educational electronics. It is not a toy or a finished standalone appliance.

  • Use a regulated low-voltage DC supply. Do not exceed 5 V or 1 W of coil power, whichever limit is reached first.
  • Use a suitable driver, such as an H-bridge, to reverse the coil current. When using PWM, select a duty cycle that keeps the average coil power within its rating.
  • Check the wiring for short circuits and incorrect connections before applying power.
  • The flap may become hot during operation. Stop use if excessive heating occurs and allow the assembly to cool before handling.
  • Do not bend, crease, puncture or apply excessive force to the flexible PCB or aluminium flap. Secure FlatFlap before use, using a suitable mounting surface, adhesive or screws.
  • The magnet and supplied components are small parts and must be kept away from young children.
  • Keep the magnet away from medical implants and magnetically sensitive equipment.
  • Disconnect power before soldering, mounting or modifying connections. Young makers should work under responsible adult supervision.

When integrating FlatFlap into a completed project, the maker is responsible for ensuring that its power supply, driver circuit, wiring, mounting, operating temperature, moving parts and enclosure are safe and suitable for the intended use.

Frequently Asked Questions CodeCell FAQs
Does FlatFlap need magnets?

The FlatFlap comes pre-assembled with the magnet so no additional magnets are required. Just power the coil for it to be repelled or attracted to the magnet. Add an h-bridge like our tiny DriveCell, to control the current through the coil, or produce smooth flappy motion.

What ages is FlatFlap suitable for?

FlatFlap is perfect for anyone curious about electronics! Since FlatFlap requires soldering, we recommend ensuring that soldering is done under proper adult supervision and guidance for children under 12. Please also note that the package includes small parts, like screws, so care should be taken when handling them.

How do I get started?

FlatFlap comes with well explained tutorials and multiple examples. All tutorials can be found here: FlatFlap Tutorials

Why does it need a DriveCell?

Want to make it flap? To achieve this, you'll to switch some transistors like an H-Bridge to flip its polarity and adjust its position. That’s why we highly recommend our compact DriveCell module, its easy to use & only measures 0.8 cm wide!
