Description & Specifications

The ProtoBot N20 Motor is a compact geared DC motor designed for small robots and custom maker projects. It is the same motor used in ProtoBot, selected for its balance of speed, torque and compact size.

It can be used as a direct replacement for a ProtoBot motor or as a compact drive motor for your own robotics projects.

  • Motor type: N20 geared brushed DC motor
  • Operating voltage: 3.3–7 V DC
  • Electrical connection: Two unsoldered motor contacts

Safety & Use
  • Use the motor with a regulated DC supply within its specified 3.3–7 V operating range and a suitable power source or motor driver.
  • Disconnect the power before soldering, wiring, mounting or adjusting the motor.
  • Secure the motor and any connected wheels or mechanisms before applying power. Keep fingers, hair, loose clothing and wires away from moving parts.
  • Motor startup and stall current can be higher than the normal running current. Avoid prolonged stalls and disconnect the power if the motor, driver or wiring becomes unusually hot.
  • This product is a small component. Keep it away from young children.

The ProtoBot N20 Motor is a low-voltage component intended for compatible DIY robots, prototypes and educational electronics. When integrating it into a completed project, you’re responsible for ensuring that the power supply, motor driver, wiring, mounting and moving parts are safe and suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I control the N20 motor?

The motor spins when a suitable DC voltage is applied across its two contacts. Reversing the polarity reverses its direction.

To control its speed and direction electronically, use an H-bridge motor driver such as the DriveCell module . You can also connect it to CodeCell Drive , which includes two motor drivers, wireless control and integrated sensors.

How do I solder the motor?

The N20 motor has unsoldered contacts so you can attach suitable wires for your project. Disconnect all power before soldering and avoid heating the motor contacts for longer than necessary.

When replacing a ProtoBot motor, unscrew the existing motor and carefully desolder the flexible PCB. Clean the pads of excess solder before attaching the replacement motor.

What voltage does it run on?

The motor is designed to operate from a regulated 3.3–7 V DC supply. Ensure that the power source and motor driver can also provide the motor’s startup and stall current.

Can I use it without a motor driver?

The motor can be connected directly to a suitable regulated DC power supply within its operating range. However, this only provides basic on-and-off operation.

Use an H-bridge motor driver if you need electronic speed or direction control. Do not connect the motor directly to a microcontroller GPIO pin.

Is this the same motor used in ProtoBot?

Yes. This is the same N20 DC motor used in ProtoBot and can be used as a direct replacement or in other compatible robotics projects.
